A GNR officer was detained in Barreiro after crashing whilst allegedly under the influence of alcohol and assaulting a PSP police agent, as reported by sol.iol.pt on the basis of information from CNN Portugal.
The accident occurred during the night on Avenida Movimento das Forças Armadas, in Barreiro, when the officer was driving his personal vehicle. Following the crash, elements from a patrol car and the PSP traffic team were deployed to the location.
During the approach to the scene, the officer adopted aggressive behaviour towards the officers. He was subjected to a breathalyser test at the scene and subsequently requested a retest, which necessitated his transfer to Barreiro Hospital.
Already at the hospital unit, the officer allegedly assaulted a PSP officer in the face and was immediately detained. The assaulted officer did not require hospital treatment.
The GNR officer is being held in PSP custody and is expected to appear before Barreiro Court by Friday. The initial court questioning will serve to determine the coercive measures to be applied in the process.
The circumstances of the crash and the alleged assault are being investigated by the authorities.
