Investigation into PJ director involves illegal wiretap in Rui Pinto case
The Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the national director of the Judicial Police, Carlos Cabreiro, and other leaders of the institution, for alleged crimes of false statements in court and abuse of power. According to dn.pt, the Attorney General's Office confirmed the opening of the case, which is related to illegal wiretaps in the Rui Pinto matter.
The investigation results from a complaint lodged in July by David Freitas, coordinator of the PJ. Freitas accuses Cabreiro—then heading the National Unit for Combating Cybercrime and Technological Crime (UNC3T)—of having lied in court about the existence of an illegal wiretap in that case.
According to the same complaint, the wiretap did in fact occur. Freitas, subsequently placed in the Unit for Prevention and Technological Support (UPAT), a unit responsible for conducting wiretaps, claims to have found the mission order signed by Cabreiro to carry out this surveillance, as well as the report recording the operation as successful.
The targeted meeting was said to have involved the hacker's lawyer, Aníbal Pinto, and Nélio Lucas, owner of the Doyen company. The wiretap was said to have proved crucial in identifying Rui Pinto, whose name was still unknown to the investigation at that stage.
The Attorney General's Office, headed by Amadeu Guerra, officially confirmed "the initiation of an inquiry".
