PJ seizes 1,644 kg of cocaine aboard sailing vessel in the Azores
Three foreign nationals were arrested — two Danish citizens and one from the United Kingdom — whilst sailing aboard a vessel that was transporting more than one and a half tonnes of cocaine. The vessel, registered in Denmark, was intercepted in the open ocean by the Anti-Trafficking Unit of the Judicial Police, with the support of the Navy.
The operation, designated "Vikings", culminated on 14 June 2025. The boat was travelling from the Caribbean towards the Azores archipelago. After its capture, it was towed to Ponta Delgada, where inspectors discovered more than five and a half million doses of the drug on board, totalling 1,644 kilogrammes.
The detainees, aged between 43 and 51 years, were charged by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Évora's District for the crimes of international drug trafficking and membership of a criminal organisation. The market value of the seized substance amounts to €53 million. The three men were brought before a judge and remain in pre-trial detention.
