PJ captures two suspects in attack on elderly people near Colombo in Alenquer
The Judicial Police have arrested two men suspected of attempted carjacking of an elderly couple in Carregado, in the municipality of Alenquer, according to jn.pt. The arrest took place in the vicinity of the Colombo Shopping Centre in Lisbon, and the detainees are now in the custody of the PJ in Leiria.
The two suspects are implicated in several armed robberies in the Lisbon and Leiria regions. The investigation is continuing with the aim of establishing the degree of involvement of each in the crimes and identifying any potential accomplices.
The incident in Carregado occurred last Sunday in broad daylight. Three hooded men, allegedly armed, attempted to steal a Mercedes from an elderly couple. One of the suspects opened the vehicle door against the owner, who is 80 years old, pushing him and throwing him to the ground when he attempted to prevent the theft. An anonymous bystander filmed the entire sequence. The three ultimately gave up and fled in a white vehicle waiting for them nearby.
Later that same day, the same group allegedly robbed a grocery store at gunpoint. Under threat of a firearm, the suspects took drinks and money from the till, in an action that lasted less than three minutes. The owners reported moments of terror caused by the robbers to TVI and CNN Portugal.
CCTV footage and the clothing worn by the suspects allowed authorities to establish a connection between the two crimes committed on the same day. Two of the three men involved have already been arrested; the Judicial Police investigation continues.
