Off-duty police officer prevents two thefts at Paço de Arcos beach
A 24-year-old man was caught at Paço de Arcos beach whilst attempting to take items that did not belong to him. The arrest was due to the promptness of a PSP officer who, although not on duty, decided to intervene.
The officer observed that the individual was heading towards the towels and personal belongings of a group of young people who were swimming. The suspect's demeanour — hurried and nervous — and the fact that he did not appear to belong to the group aroused the police officer's suspicions.
The young man ended up arguing with the owners of the belongings, who understood his intentions. He threatened one of them and left the beach.
The officer kept on his trail. About ten minutes later, the alleged thief approached two electric scooters locked with a padlock and attempted to steal them. It was at that moment that the police officer identified himself and stopped the crime.
According to the PSP, the individual reacted with hostility. He was ultimately detained, constituted as a defendant and placed under a Bail Bond. He was subsequently released, being obliged to appear before the Judicial Authority.
