Arouca President and former mayor maintain conviction for malfeasance
The Court of Appeal of Porto decided this Thursday to uphold the punishment applied to five defendants, including Carlos Pinho, current leader of Arouca Football Club, and José Artur Neves, former mayor of the municipality. The sentences range between two and a half and three years in prison, with suspension of execution for an equivalent period.
The crimes in question are malfeasance and document falsification. The Attorney General's Office–Porto announced the decision on its online page, indicating that the panel of judges validated the facts deemed proven by the Court of Aveiro in March of this year.
Everything began in 2013, with interventions at the Municipal Stadium of Arouca—namely the paving of the track and respective accesses—which were awarded directly to the firm of Carlos Pinho, ignoring public procurement rules. Two years later, the defendants set up a fictitious procurement procedure to enable the payment.
In addition to the prison sentences, the company owned by Carlos Pinho was also convicted to a fine of €22,500, a decision equally confirmed by the higher court.
