Prisoners convicted of domestic violence continue to rise in Portugal
Portuguese prisons housed 183 inmates convicted of domestic violence between January and March 2026, an increase over the number recorded in the first three months of 2025. This type of crime has been translating into continuous growth in the prison population.
The Commission for Equality and Women's Rights (CIG) released the figures for the first quarter of the year on Wednesday. The data also shows an increase in domestic violence suspects wearing electronic monitors, as well as suspects without such devices but subject to other procedural obligations.
The security forces received more reports — the PSP and GNR registered an increase, albeit modest compared to the immediately preceding quarter. Another indicator that set a record was the teleassistance system intended to protect victims, with more beneficiaries than ever.
The development over the years is significant: comparing with the first quarter of 2019, the increase in those detained for domestic violence amounts to 709 individuals.
