Lisbon's PSP detained 214 taxi drivers for price speculation in the first five months of the year, the force announced this Tuesday. The figure represents a 132 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025, when 92 detentions were recorded, according to Correio da Manhã.
The crime in question consists of the intentional alteration of prices regulating the provision of taxi services, with the objective of obtaining illegitimate profit by charging amounts above those legally established. The penalties envisaged range from six months to three years imprisonment, or a fine of between 100 and 150 days.
The PSP highlighted that supplementary sanctions with a deterrent effect are being progressively applied. "It is important to note that, gradually, supplementary sanctions are beginning to be applied that promote the dissuasion of these behaviours, namely the seizure of the CMT (taxi driver certificate)", the police authority emphasised.
