Anacom registered more than 180 complaints in two weeks from phone calls in which criminals impersonate inspectors of the authority.
Telecommunications regulator alerts to false call scheme
The entity that oversees the communications sector in Portugal received more than 180 complaints from citizens, between 25 May and 8 June, regarding fraudulent phone calls. The criminals involved in this scheme present themselves as inspectors of Anacom.
According to the statement issued by the National Communications Authority, the authors of the calls claim that the number of the contacted person is associated with the practice of unlawful activities. To increase credibility, they use personal data of the recipients which, although incomplete, contain true information.
Anacom stressed that it never contacts users in this manner, nor transmits personal data to other entities. The institution appealed to the public that, should they receive any contact of this type, they should report it immediately to police authorities, including the PSP and the GNR.
