The Maritime Police, in collaboration with the Portuguese Navy, seized two high-speed speedboats "allegedly involved" in drug trafficking on Tuesday, 31 March, in the Algarve. According to dn.pt reporting, the operation resulted in the detention of seven people — six of Spanish nationality and one of Moroccan nationality.
After identifying the suspects as "suspicious targets", elements of the Tactical Actions Group of the Maritime Police and the Boarding Unit of the Marines proceeded to intercept the two vessels, with reinforcement from the Southern Regional Command of the Maritime Police.
According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), when detected, the occupants of the speedboats "engaged in flight at high speed, performing several risky evasive manoeuvres in order to escape the pursuit", with ground forces managing to intercept them.
"The two speedboats, allegedly used in the context of drug trafficking, were seized, with seven people arrested, six of Spanish nationality and one of Moroccan nationality, who are now subject to ongoing legal procedures", the AMN states in a press release sent to newsrooms.
