Supreme Court upholds stalker's sentence from ISCSP after appeal rejected
The Supreme Court of Justice refused the appeal filed by Joana F., convicted to seven years and nine months in prison for harassment of a colleague at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (ISCSP), according to reports from Correio da Manhã. The defendant, who refuses to serve the sentence, has now filed an appeal to the Constitutional Court.
The decision is considered unprecedented in Portugal in the context of harassment crimes. For two years — between 2019 and 2021 — Joana F. followed, humiliated and threatened the victim, creating, according to the court, an environment of terror and fear. Both women were students at the same higher education institution in Lisbon.
The seven-year and nine-month sentence had already been upheld by the Court of Appeal of Lisbon, before the defendant took the case to the Supreme Court. With the rejection of the appeal by the Supreme Court of Justice, Joana F. has exhausted another avenue of ordinary appeal against conviction.
