Man suspected of fraud detained in Montijo remanded in custody following vehicle search
A 42-year-old man was detained by the GNR in Montijo following a road traffic inspection, with the court ordering remand in custody.
Detained in Montijo with 18 mobile phones and 38 bank cards
A 42-year-old man was remanded in custody after being detained on suspicion of fraud in the municipality of Montijo, Setúbal district, according to reports in Correio da Manhã. The Montijo Judicial Court ordered the most serious measure of restraint on Friday, one day after his detention.
The detention took place on Thursday as part of a road traffic inspection conducted by the Setúbal Territorial Command of the GNR. Officers stopped a vehicle and detected a breach for failure to carry out mandatory periodic vehicle inspection.
During the inspection, the driver displayed "nervous behaviour", which prompted officers to search the interior of the vehicle. Inside the vehicle, "various mobile phones, bank cards with their respective PIN codes and various gold items" were found, the GNR stated in a statement.
The suspect was unable to "justify possession of the aforementioned items", according to the security force.
The operation resulted in the seizure of €9,730 in cash, a light passenger vehicle, a laptop computer, 18 mobile phones, 38 bank cards, 42 SIM cards from various operators and 31 SIM card packages. Various gold items and banking documentation were also seized.
During the police investigation, it was further established that the suspect was the subject of an arrest warrant for breach of a court-ordered requirement to remain at home previously decreed by the court.
The operation was reinforced by the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Montijo Territorial Detachment.
