The three suspects arrested in connection with the shooting that occurred in Lisbon's Lower Town in August, which injured a 40-year-old Swedish tourist, were brought before a judge for questioning on Thursday at the Campus de Justiça. The information was released by the Judicial Police (PJ), according to sabado.pt.
In a statement, the PJ confirmed that the three citizens, aged between 21 and 32, were arrested on Tuesday through the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Directorate. The incident that led to the arrests took place on 10 August, when the Swedish tourist was hit in the thoracic region by a stray bullet.
The victim was caught in the middle of a confrontation between two groups engaged in selling compressed cannabis as if it were drugs. One of those involved fired a firearm during the altercation, with the bullet striking the Nordic citizen.
The police operation that led to the arrests covered the Lisbon and Aveiro regions, with various house searches being carried out. According to the PJ, the suspects subsequently presented themselves voluntarily at police facilities after learning they were being sought by the authorities, and were arrested "early in the evening".
The investigation is headed by the Public Prosecutor's Office in the Lisbon Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP).
It should be noted that, also in August, a suspect had been arrested under a warrant for domestic violence, with no direct connection to the shooting, and was subsequently released in connection with that case.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) announced increased policing in the Lower Town and other tourist areas of Lisbon, with the PSP and Municipal Police intensifying their scrutiny of illegal activities.
The president of Lisbon's Municipal Council, Carlos Moedas (PSD), has been pressing the Government to fulfil its promise to deploy an additional 200 PSP officers and 100 municipal police officers in the capital — a commitment made in May. At the meeting of Lisbon's Municipal Assembly, Moedas acknowledged that the reinforcement had yet to materialise: "We still do not have the 100 municipal police officers, nor the 200 PSP. We do not have them, but I believe, deeply, that the Government will fulfil and must fulfil this commitment this year."
The mayor stated he was "alarmed by many situations" in terms of security in the city, appealing for support from "moderate forces" in defence of democracy, and stressed that the issue is not ideological.
