Three doctors arrested in disability benefit fraud scheme that benefited 182 people
The Judicial Police arrested three healthcare professionals linked to a scheme involving falsification of medical reports for disability benefits. The scheme benefited 182 individuals, whose pensions were cancelled by Social Security following reassessment.
In addition to doctor Emuna Mia, from Santo Estêvão, the investigation revealed the involvement of two other clinicians. Twin brothers Pedro Barreira and João Vasco Barreira, figures known on social media, worked as experts at the District Centre in Santarém and allegedly ratified their colleague's decisions.
The three detainees are suspects of facilitating the issuance of medical documents attesting to non-existent work incapacity, allowing hundreds of people to improperly access disability pensions. The brothers allegedly confirmed nine reports drawn up by the doctor from Santo Estêvão.
Data from the Social Security Institute indicate that the 182 people who benefited from the scheme had their benefits cancelled after being deemed fit to work.
