Court suspends Benavente doctor suspected of facilitating illegal early retirements

The Criminal Investigation Court of Santarém has ordered the suspension of functions for Emuna Mia, a doctor from Benavente, in connection with "Operation Relax". The healthcare professional is suspected of having validated 182 disability certificates in a scheme that allegedly defrauded Social Security by approximately 18 million euros.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the doctor received one thousand euros for each certificate issued, facilitating the granting of illegal early retirements. The investigation also involves twin doctors Pedro Barreira and João Vasco Barreira, who acted as experts for the District Centre of Santarém.

The court's decision, taken on Friday, keeps the doctor at liberty but with several restrictions: suspension of professional practice, prohibition from leaving national territory and surrender of her passport. The two twin doctors were released with the lighter measure of bail, a recognizance bond with conditions as to residence.
