PSP officers working undercover on Sunday detained a 35-year-old individual who robbed a foreign visitor in the nightlife area of Cais de Sodré. The crime occurred as part of the police operation "Sardine 2026", designed to monitor the Festas de Santos Populares celebrations in the capital.
The inspectors, focused on suppressing the trade in counterfeit illicit substances and theft, saw the suspect isolate the tourist from his group. The offender demanded money from the foreigner, allegedly because he had inhaled a dose of counterfeit cocaine. When the victim refused, the attacker threatened him with the possibility of being struck with stones, forcing him to attempt to withdraw money at two ATM terminals.
As the withdrawal attempts failed, the thief merely stole a twenty-euro note from the tourist. At that moment, the security forces moved in to make the arrest.
In addition to the money recovered, officers confiscated a package with a substance that was later confirmed not to be genuine drugs. The suspect was brought before a judge, who imposed on him the obligation to report to the authorities three times per week.
