Former Marset secretary arrested in Paraguay linked to football and drug trafficking
The former secretary of Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset in Paraguay was detained on Sunday during an operation in Itacurubí de la Cordillera, reports El Deber. The arrested man is Dionisio Manuel Cáceres Cabrera, aged 38, known as "Manu".
Agents from the Antinarcotics Department located him on the morning of 6 September at a residence in his hometown, in Cordillera Department. The detention took place as part of the so-called "Operation Nexus II", according to Paraguayan newspaper ABC Color.
Sought since February
The investigation that led to his capture began on 17 February 2026, when authorities began to dismantle Marset's former structure in Paraguayan territory. Cáceres was one of the targets from the start of that operation.
The investigation indicates that "Manu" acted as Marset's secretary and, at the same time, presented himself as a sports entrepreneur. He came to hold the position of sports manager at club Rubio Ñu and, according to investigators, managed sports activities using funds linked to the Uruguayan drug trafficker. He is also identified as one of the people who facilitated Marset's arrival at club Deportivo Capiatá.
Another detainee with football connections
Cáceres is not the only person linked to Paraguayan football in this case. Among those detained in the same file is Víctor Centurión, former goalkeeper for Olimpia and the Paraguayan National Football Team. The investigation examines the role of different people who allegedly had connections to the organisation attributed to Marset.
Cocaine routes under scrutiny
"Operation Nexus II" specifically targets those who were part of the structure that Marset allegedly set up in Paraguay. Investigators suspect that several members of that group may have reactivated routes previously used for cocaine trafficking.
Sebastián Marset is identified as the central figure of that organisation. The Uruguayan drug trafficker was captured in Bolivia on 13 March and is currently held in the United States. The Paraguayan operation focuses on the collaborators who were operating in local territory and on the possible resurgence of his trafficking networks.
With Cáceres' arrest, authorities add another detainee from those sought since the beginning of the investigation. The case remains open as investigators work to identify and process the other alleged members of the Uruguayan drug trafficker's structure in Paraguay.
