Public Prosecutor's Office counts 20 femicides in Paraguay up to October 2026
The Paraguayan Public Prosecutor's Office reported on Friday 20 femicide victims so far this year, according to abc.com.py, which accessed the report distributed within the Public Ministry's Open Data Programme, chapter on Violence against Women. The cases led to the opening of 19 criminal cases; in one of the files, the murder of two women is being investigated.
The statistics also reveal 28 victims of attempted femicide. In addition to this are one case of violent death classified as homicide, four charges for attempted homicide—among which a child figures as a collateral victim—and six women who suffered extremely serious attacks by their ex-partners.
January, the deadliest month
The monthly breakdown indicates that January accounted for the largest number of deaths, with six cases. March recorded four; July, three; May and August, two each. The months of April, September and October each reported one femicide.
By department, Central leads the distribution with 12 of the 20 victims. This is followed by Concepción with three cases and Canindeyú with two. Asunción, Alto Paraná and Caazapá each recorded one case.
Victims between 12 and 80 years old
The ages of the murdered women ranged from 12 to 80 years; among the victims is a girl under 12 years old. In most of the crimes, the perpetrator was the victim's partner or ex-partner—eight cases in each category—followed by a stepfather, a son and two acquaintances.
Of the 20 fatal victims, 14 were mothers. Eighteen had Paraguayan nationality, one was Brazilian national and two belonged to indigenous communities. The social impact leaves a total of 36 indirect victims—children of the deceased—of which 26 are minors.
The home, the most dangerous place
Fifteen of the twenty femicides occurred within homes; five took place in public spaces. As for the weapons used, in 11 cases cutting weapons were employed, six victims died from gunshot wounds, two from injuries caused by blows and one from asphyxiation.
Status of judicial cases
The Public Ministry managed to charge 15 of the alleged perpetrators. Five of the perpetrators took their own lives after committing the crime. One suspect has an international arrest warrant and was detained in Brazil, where he will be tried.
In two of the main cases, related offences are being investigated in parallel, including alleged child abuse and attempted sexual abuse.
