Uruguayan arrested in Paraguay for trafficking precursors to Bolivia

Hugo Javier Fagúndez Suárez, a 52-year-old Uruguayan citizen, was detained in Paraguay for being part of a network dedicated to sending chemical precursors to Bolivia for the manufacture of cocaine. According to teledoce.com, investigators are also examining a possible link to Tatiana Marset, sister of drug trafficker Sebastián Marset.

According to the Paraguayan media outlet ABC, cited by teledoce.com, Fagúndez has a criminal record in Uruguay for various offences and was the main suspect identified by Paraguay's anti-narcotics police. On repeated occasions he entered the country to acquire shipments of ethyl acetate, a chemical used in cocaine production, which was then transported by truck to Bolivia.

According to the investigation, that cocaine would be manufactured in Bolivian territory by Marset's organisation for subsequent trafficking. Data from the Paraguayan Police, which the Bolivian media outlet El Deber had access to, indicate that Fagúndez and Tatiana Marset maintained telephone contact. Investigators point out that this communication makes it possible to establish a connection between the two and that Tatiana Marset operated as his contact in Bolivia.

Tatiana Marset was detained the same day her brother Sebastián was captured, although she has stated she has no involvement with the organisation. Bolivian justice has already ordered her return to prison following complaints of breach of house arrest.

Along with Fagúndez, three Paraguayan citizens were arrested in the same operation. During the procedure, 59 drums containing approximately 11,800 litres of the chemical precursor were seized.
