The gendarmerie announced on Thursday the detention of a further five people following the violent protest at Victoriei Square. In total, 55 people have been taken to police stations.

Jurnalul.ro reports that the wave of detentions in the capital continues several days after the violent incidents on Tuesday at Victoriei Square. The gendarmerie announced on Thursday that a detention order of 24 hours has been issued against another five protest participants, with these individuals to be presented to court with legal proposals.
According to a statement sent to the AGERPRES news agency, authorities have taken a total of 55 people to police stations. A total of 33 contraventional sanctions have been issued, with a combined value of 66,800 lei.
On the criminal side, one person has been arrested in custody, and a further four men have been placed under house arrest. The five detained on Thursday are in addition to these cases, with the criminal file being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office of Bucharest District Court, together with officers from the Violent Criminal Groups Service and the Criminal Investigation Service.
The Bucharest Gendarmerie specified that verification procedures continue in order to identify and penalise other individuals who provoked law enforcement, exerted pressure on the gendarmerie deployment or incited violence, in breach of the legal framework in force. According to earlier reports, a gendarme is understood to have been struck with a bat on the head during the operation.
