International drug trafficking network dismantled by Romanian Police in August 2026

Almost two tonnes of medium and high-risk drugs were captured in August 2026, following the dismantling of an important international drug trafficking network, according to Google News RO — Crime (ro). The announcement was made on Monday by interim Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu, in the context of a report on the activities of Interior Ministry structures during the last month of summer.

"Also in August, we recorded another major success in combating drug trafficking," Predoiu declared, adding that the network had been dismantled and the quantity seized includes medium and high-risk drugs.

The operation was carried out by the anti-drugs structures of the Romanian Police, in cooperation with other entities of the Interior Ministry and international partners. The seizure is part of an investigation into a network coordinated from Romania, in which authorities had previously identified shipments of approximately 1.7 tonnes of drugs.

The group allegedly used articulated lorries with hidden compartments to transport cocaine, cannabis and hashish from Spain to several European countries.

August, an intensive month for the Interior Ministry

Predoiu characterised August as a particularly demanding month for all structures of the ministry. Tens of thousands of police officers, gendarmes, border police, firefighters and employees of other structures worked in the field daily.

Among the special missions were interventions related to military drones that reached the seashore or fell on Romanian territory. Interior Ministry forces and the Coast Guard worked in cooperation with the Secret Intelligence Service, the Ministry of National Defence and local authorities to protect the population.

Intervention forces also participated in the rescue of sailors who were shipwrecked after a commercial vessel sank.

Romanian firefighters responded to forest fires in the western part of the country and simultaneously carried out international missions in France, Greece and Serbia.

The interim minister also highlighted the activity of law enforcement forces within the Coastal Action Programme 2026, as well as missions carried out at festivals and events with large audiences.

"With increasingly numerous and serious challenges, with increasingly complex civil activities, festivals and major festivals, drones, actions to combat crime in general, the Interior Ministry fulfilled its missions successfully," Cătălin Predoiu stated, thanking the employees involved in the actions from August and throughout the entire summer season.
