Constanța Court of Appeal: house arrest for university assistants accused of corruption at Medical Faculty
Constanța Court of Appeal decided on Tuesday to replace pre-trial detention with house arrest for two university assistants at the Faculty of Medicine of "Ovidius" University, being investigated for accepting bribes, according to Cotidianul.ro. The decision is final.
The case came to light last month when the National Anti-Corruption Directorate carried out 26 home searches. Both the faculty headquarters and medical offices and homes of the main suspects—teaching staff of the institution—were targeted.
DNA alleges that the university assistants requested sums of money from students in exchange for passing Anatomy examinations. According to the DNA statement, the accused Talpeș Raluca "allegedly demanded and received, on repeated occasions, through the intermediary of the other three accused, sums of money as bribes, from students enrolled in the two resit sessions for the anatomy subject, conducted in the periods 06–12 July 2026 and 01–06 September 2026, for the purpose of fraudulently passing the resit colloquiums/examinations".
At the conclusion of the investigation, DNA requested that the court order pre-trial detention for four persons. Constanța Court issued arrest warrants only for the two university assistants, not for the two students involved in the case.
All those targeted admitted to the facts. The university assistants contested the pre-trial detention measure, and the Court of Appeal accepted their appeals, replacing the measure with house arrest.
The decision comes one week after Constanța Court extended the pre-trial detention warrants for a further 30 days.
