Man from Arad remanded in custody for impersonating police officer and extorting money from drivers
A 41-year-old man from Șiria, Arad County, has been remanded in custody by the Oradea court. He is suspected of wearing police-specific equipment and stopping two people driving foreign-registered vehicles in traffic, claiming to impose fines on them and taking more than 5,000 lei from them.

A 41-year-old man, resident of Șiria commune, Arad County, is being held in custody for the next 30 days, following a decision by Oradea Court. Law enforcement officials are investigating him for allegedly posing as a police officer and deceiving two drivers, taking substantial sums of money from them.
The alleged incidents took place on DN1, in Oșorhei locality, Bihor County. At the end of June, on two consecutive days, the suspect allegedly wore clothing specific to a law enforcement officer and intercepted moving vehicles with foreign registration plates.
In the first instance, a 28-year-old woman was approached on 25 June, around 16:30. The man allegedly told her she had committed a traffic offence and that her right to drive would be suspended. To avoid this, he asked her for 2,200 lei, claiming he would return her driving licence. The woman gave him the money but received no proof of payment.
The following day, at a similar time (15:30), the same man allegedly repeated the manoeuvre. The victim was a 51-year-old man on this occasion. The aggressor initially asked him for 5,000 lei, and the driver offered him 3,000 lei.
Police officers from Section 5 of Oradea Rural Police identified and remanded him in custody on 5 July for 24 hours. Prosecutors from the Oradea Court's Prosecutor's Office requested his arrest, and the court approved the request.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities set to establish whether the suspect has other victims.
