Knife attack on police officer in Sector 3 apartment results in shooting of attacker
A man from Bucharest barricaded himself in an apartment in Sector 3 on Saturday and attacked a police officer from the assault team that intervened at the scene with a knife, according to ProTV News. The aggressor was shot with non-lethal rubber ammunition and transported to hospital with abdominal injuries that did not pose a threat to his life.
The intervention was triggered after a woman called 112 and reported that her husband had threatened to harm himself, with the family fearing for his safety. Officers from Precinct 13 arrived at the scene, along with the Special Actions Service from the Capital Police, a negotiator, and the assault team.
"Police officers proceeded urgently to the indicated address, where they found that the man was inside the apartment and refused to open the door and cooperate with law enforcement," Capital Police officials said on Sunday. The negotiator initiated dialogue with the man to defuse the situation, but he continued to refuse any cooperation.
In these circumstances, it was decided to force entry into the residence. When the assault team entered the apartment, the man attacked a police officer in the front line of the unit with a knife. Police officers ordered him to stop, but he continued to be agitated.
To immobilise him in safe conditions, a police officer used a weapon with non-lethal ammunition. The man suffered injuries to the abdominal area. The medical crew at the scene immediately provided first aid, after which he was transported to hospital for specialist evaluation and treatment.
"According to available medical information, the injuries sustained did not pose a threat to his life, with the man being out of any danger. Following discharge, he is to be admitted to a specialist medical facility," representatives of the Capital Police said.
As a result of the attack on the police officer, a criminal file was opened against the man for the offence of assaulting an officer.
