Court of Appeal hears DIICOT's appeal on Călin Georgescu's judicial control
The Bucharest Court of Appeal is hearing on Tuesday an appeal by DIICOT prosecutors against the decision to place Georgescu under judicial control. He is accused of fraud and forming a criminal group.
Bucharest Court of Appeal called to decide in the Georgescu case
The Bucharest Court of Appeal is examining on Tuesday the appeal filed by DIICOT prosecutors against the Bucharest Court's ruling through which former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu remained at liberty under judicial control, according to ProTV News.
Georgescu had been detained for 24 hours at the beginning of last week, under accusations of forming an organised criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences, in continuous form. The Bucharest Court rejected DIICOT's request for remand in custody and ordered his placement under judicial control for 60 days, according to Agerpres. An identical decision applied to businessman Ionel Rusen, considered an accomplice of Georgescu.
The investigation began from a complaint filed by Răzvan Leu, a businessman from Buzău, who claims he was defrauded of one million euros. Leu states that he met Georgescu through a mutual friend, Ion Negoescu, after which the former candidate proposed his participation in a business dealing in precious metals transactions.
The business required a credit line of 6 million euros. Georgescu allegedly recommended to Leu that he contact Ionel Rusen, who in turn put him in contact with Italian citizen Massimiliano Arena, presented as a representative of a Swiss bank.
To obtain the credit, Leu was asked to pay a guarantee of one million euros, of which 100,000 euros were to finance Georgescu's electoral campaign for the presidency. Prosecutors specify that for this latter sum a detailed expenditure plan was also presented. The victim subsequently transferred a further 100,000 euros, with the promise that the loan could reach 15 million euros.
The credit was never granted, and the businessman from Buzău requested the return of the full guarantee of 1.1 million euros, but did not receive the money back.
After the court ordered Georgescu to remain at liberty, prosecutors instituted seizure on his villa in Mogoșoaia as a measure to recover the damages.
