Georgescu in remand detention: DIICOT places him in €1.1 million fraud case
Former candidate for the presidency of Romania Călin Georgescu has been placed in remand detention at the request of DIICOT prosecutors, according to goldring.ro. Magistrates approved the investigators' request on the basis of evidence presented — WhatsApp messages, emails and transcripts of telephone conversations.
The case concerns a fraudulent scheme through which the criminal group, in which Georgescu is said to have played an active role, is alleged to have promised businessman Răzvan Leu the intermediation of a €6 million credit in exchange for sums of money. Of the total €1.1 million claimed to have been misappropriated, approximately €100,000 is said to have been directed towards the electoral campaign of the former presidential candidate.
On Wednesday, investigators transferred Georgescu from the Central Detention Facility to DIICOT headquarters to continue computer searches. USB sticks, mobile phones and hard drives confiscated from the home of the Georgescu couple in Mogoşoaia are being examined, with the aim of identifying traces of money received from the businessman from Buzău.
From detention, his wife Cristela communicated that Georgescu consumes food brought from home and is fasting on water. He shares a cell with two other inmates, in a space with a window kept open.
In front of the Central Detention Facility, Georgescu's supporters gather daily. On Wednesday evening, approximately 150 people were present — fewer than in previous days, when the number reached 300, and nearly 2,000 participants respectively.
