Călin Georgescu escorted to court on Monday at Court of Appeal, DIICOT and Bucharest Court of Appeal
Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu has three court hearings on Monday, including a request to replace his remand in custody. The damage claimed in the fraud case amounts to 1.1 million euros.
Three courts in a single day for Călin Georgescu, held in remand custody
The former candidate in the 2024 presidential elections, Călin Georgescu, will be escorted on Monday from the central detention facility of the Bucharest Police to three different courts in Bucharest, according to goldring.ro.
The first stop, scheduled for 9:00 a.m., is Bucharest Tribunal, where his defence lawyers are requesting the replacement of remand custody with a milder measure — house arrest or judicial control — in the fraud case and formation of an organised criminal group.
At the same time slot, Georgescu must also be present at DIICOT, where investigators are continuing the examination of electronic devices seized from the former candidate's villa in Mogoșoaia. At 12:00 p.m., he has a hearing at the Bucharest Court of Appeal, where he is being tried alongside Horațiu Potra and other persons for incitement to actions against constitutional order, in attempted form.
Thirty-day remand custody with divergent opinion
Georgescu has been in remand custody for 30 days, a measure decided on Tuesday, 29 September, in the DIICOT case. The decision was adopted with a divergent opinion: two of the three judges from the Bucharest Court of Appeal cited reasonable suspicion of committing the offences and the risk of fleeing the country, whilst one judge considered that judicial control would have been sufficient. She argued that the fraud charge could in reality represent a commercial relationship, and the existence of the criminal group is not sufficiently well-defined.
Damage of 1.1 million euros and a complaint from 2024
In the fraud case handled by DIICOT, the claimed damage amounts to 1.1 million euros. The investigation was launched following a criminal complaint filed in January 2024 by Buzău businessman Răzvan Leu.
Leu claims he lost the sum of 1.1 million euros, deposited as guarantee, after he was promised external financing of approximately six million euros. He states that he met Georgescu in 2021 and had "complete confidence" in the business plans presented. The company that was to provide the financing was recommended to him, according to him, by Georgescu and persons from his business circle.
According to sources cited by Gândul, Georgescu allegedly presented Leu to Ionel Rusen, described as a businessman with connections and resources. Although Georgescu allegedly assured him there were no problems, the credit did not materialise, and the guarantee was not returned. Leu stated that he received falsified payment orders and other documents indicating the return of the money, and that he attempted for several years to recover the sum without resorting to the courts.
