Singer Cristian Pomohaci detained for 24 hours in Târgu Mureș over sexual offence charges

Pomohaci detained after searches in Târgu Mureș: case involving minor victims
Singer Cristian Pomohaci, aged 57, was detained on Wednesday evening for 24 hours after police from the Criminal Investigation Service in Mureș carried out two home searches at his residences in Târgu Mureș, according to agerpres.ro. The measure was taken in connection with a criminal case concerning offences against sexual liberty and integrity.
"On 3 June 2026, under the coordination and supervision of the prosecutor assigned to the case at the Office of the Prosecutor attached to Târgu Mureș District Court, police from the Criminal Investigation Service in Mureș executed two home search warrants in the municipality of Târgu Mureș in a criminal matter concerning the commission of offences against sexual liberty and integrity", announced the Mureș County Police Inspectorate (IPJ). Pomohaci was taken to the Mureș Detention and Preventive Arrest Centre and is to be presented to judicial authorities with a legal proposal.
Facts under investigation since 2022, involving minors
One of the searched locations was situated near the centre of the municipality of Târgu Mureș. Sources within the investigation specified that the case concerns events that allegedly occurred starting in 2022 and that those involved include minors. The investigation continues under the supervision of the assigned prosecutor, with a view to documenting the entire criminal activity and establishing the precise facts and legal status, the IPJ Mureș noted.
Background: defrocking and circulars from the Archbishopric
This is not the first time Pomohaci has faced accusations of this nature. An earlier case was discontinued; however, the artist had already been removed from clerical office by decision of the Metropolitan Consistory, decision no. 4/06.10.2017.
In early May 2026, the Orthodox Archbishopric of Alba Iulia issued a new circular to all places of worship, "in view of the numerous complaints received at the diocesan centre, through which several persons complained of the experience they had with former priest Cristian Pomohaci". The document reiterated an earlier circular from October 2022, through which believers in Alba and Mureș counties were notified that Pomohaci no longer held the status of priest.
Archbishopric: premises in Ernei do not belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church
The Archbishopric's circular pointed out that Pomohaci converted a premises in Ernei commune, Mureș county, into a church and monastery, where "both he and other self-styled priests and so-called nuns conduct services according to Orthodox rite". The institution emphasised that that place "does not belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church".
"Unfortunately, Mr Cristian Pomohaci continues illegally to wear the priestly habit and priestly vestments, misleading many people and even daring to appear dressed as a priest when he was on a journey to the Holy Land", the same document stated. The Archbishopric urged believers not to frequent the premises in Ernei, not to request from Pomohaci any "services" or "absolutions" and not to contribute financially to the "collections" organised there.
The document further specified that the Archbishopric of Alba Iulia no longer holds canonical authority over Pomohaci and that steps have been taken with the state authorities for the application of the legal measures that are necessary.
