Five instigators from Victory Square arrested or placed under house arrest following violence
One received 30 days of preventive detention, four others were placed under house arrest following hearings at Sector 1 Court. A sixth suspect was detained whilst in possession of a firearm.
Sector 1 Court decides fate of instigators from Tuesday's violent protest
Five of the individuals suspected of inciting violence at Victory Square were transported by police van on Wednesday evening to Sector 1 Court, following hearings at police stations, according to Digi24. Prosecutors requested preventive detention for all five.
The hearing, which lasted over two hours, concluded with a mixed decision: one protester received 30 days of preventive detention, whilst the other four were placed under house arrest.
Among those who received house arrest was, according to Digi24 journalist Teodora Chiuș, one of the most well-known supporters of Călin Georgescu. He allegedly encouraged TikTok users to resort to violence at Victory Square. Before the court, the man stated that he had gone to the square in solidarity with farmers, claiming he had spent his childhood in the countryside, and denied that he had struck gendarmes.
The five will be joined by a sixth suspect, detained on Wednesday whilst attempting to reach his home in Bihor county. A firearm was found in his possession.
Investigators determined that the individuals brought to justice had initially incited shepherds, and subsequently mobilised members from their own groups to attack gendarmes and escalate violence in the Victory Square area. Police officers and gendarmes identified each of them individually following Tuesday's violence.
Several individuals were brought in for questioning following the incidents at Victory Square, as part of the investigation into the disorder during the protest.
