Ilfov Licence Corruption: 18 Suspects Questioned at DNA Following Bribes of Up to €500

DNA Searches at Ilfov Licencing Directorate: Police Officers Accused of Accepting Bribes for Driving Licences

Prosecutors from the National Anticorruption Directorate carried out searches on Wednesday morning at the Ilfov Licencing Directorate, as well as at the homes of several police officers suspected of accepting money to facilitate the obtaining of driving licences, according to ProTV News.

The investigation targets 18 suspects, mostly police officers, who are believed to have received bribes of up to €500 per candidate. The sums were paid in several stages: first to be given priority appointments for the practical test, subsequently to guarantee passing the examination, and finally to receive the driving licence itself.

The case also involves instructors from driving schools, as well as candidates who are believed to have paid these sums. According to sources close to the investigation cited by ProTV News, the suspects were subject to surveillance measures over several months — they were recorded in audio and video covertly, with the evidence thus obtained expected to support the DNA accusations.

Following the completion of the searches, all 18 suspects presented themselves at DNA headquarters to provide explanations and were charged. Sources within the institution indicate that those who paid bribes will also be investigated criminally, with the investigation expected to be expanded. Dozens of other individuals will be called in the coming days to DNA for questioning and to be charged in turn.
