Crime in Craiova: man killed in his sleep and set on fire, body found after nearly two weeks
A 27-year-old man was killed in his own flat in Craiova whilst asleep, and his body was subsequently set on fire. The gruesome discovery occurred nearly two weeks after the crime was committed, according to Digi24.
The victim, originally from Craiova, was found charred in his apartment on Amaradia Street, located near a petrol station. Neighbours alerted the authorities after smelling a strong odour coming from the flat. Police officers, firefighters and forensic specialists attended the scene.
The investigation established that the young man had been killed on 19 June whilst he was in bed. The attacker allegedly set fire to his body in an attempt to cover up evidence of the crime. The fire did not spread to other flats in the building.
Law enforcement officers quickly identified a suspect, a 33-year-old man who was known to the victim. The two had allegedly consumed alcohol together on the evening before the tragedy. The exact motive for the attack was not disclosed by investigators.
The suspect was detained for 24 hours and was investigated for aggravated murder. Prosecutors are to decide whether they will request preventive arrest of the suspect.
