Cristela Georgescu accuses DIICOT of political persecution following hearings: "A political case in its purest form"
The wife of Călin Georgescu left DIICOT accusing brutal searches and a political case. Călin Georgescu remains in pre-trial detention, accused of fraud with an estimated loss of 1.1 million euros.

Cristela Georgescu makes strong statements upon leaving DIICOT: accuses traumatic interventions and information leaks
Cristela Georgescu was questioned at the central offices of DIICOT in the criminal case in which her husband, former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, has been in pre-trial detention since 29 September. Upon leaving the building, in front of supporters and journalists, she characterised the judicial procedures as "political persecution", according to Cotidianul.ro.
"We find ourselves in a state that claims to be democratic, a state of law and which was promised to us to be honest. Nevertheless, we are witnessing political persecution and a political case in its purest form," Cristela Georgescu stated.
Searches described as "brutal" and "unacceptable"
Călin Georgescu's wife described the raids on the family's home as traumatising, emphasising that a minor child and her 90-year-old father were present in the house. She claimed that the manner in which investigators entered the house was disproportionate to the circumstances.
"It was a brutal way in which the house was entered over me, the minor child and my father, even though we were there. The traumatising and almost inhuman manner in which an innocent child was guarded in bed by an armed man, who may himself be a father, and a 90-year-old man was guarded the same way, in bed," she asserted.
Cristela Georgescu also criticised the manner in which her husband was detained — taken away and handcuffed in traffic, in front of minor children. In her view, Călin Georgescu posed no imminent danger that would justify such a procedure.
"The humiliating and traumatising manner in which, in front of minor children, Călin was taken away, handcuffed, taken away in traffic, without him presenting a serious, imminent danger," she added.
Accusations concerning information leaks and violation of the presumption of innocence
Cristela Georgescu complained that confidential information from the case appeared in the press before being presented to the judge, contrary to legal provisions. She also claimed that the right to privacy of the family was not respected.
"Confidential information, which according to law is not allowed to become public before it reaches the judge, appeared in the press before being presented to the judge. And this gave rise to false interpretations. Our right to privacy was not respected and all our information was made public. And the presumption of innocence is also not being respected," she stated.
She specified that the electronic search procedure had not been completed and would continue in the following days. She also announced her intention to petition the European Court of Human Rights for alleged breaches of fundamental rights.
"Fundamental freedoms and rights have been seriously violated, including those under the ECHR. I will return with details in the following days because the search has not been completed, probably tomorrow and even the day after," Cristela Georgescu concluded.
Cristela Georgescu's father questioned a day earlier
Cristela Georgescu's hearings follow those on 5 October, when her father, Vasile Moldoveanu, was also called to DIICOT as a witness. Investigators are examining the circumstances in which Vasile Moldoveanu granted a loan of 118,000 lei to businessman Răzvan Leu in October 2023, as part of checks into the financial circulation of the sums involved in the case.
Călin Georgescu in pre-trial detention for fraud causing damage of 1.1 million euros
Călin Georgescu has been in pre-trial detention since 29 September, after the Bucharest Court of Appeal issued an arrest warrant for 30 days. He is accused of fraud with particularly serious consequences, the damage estimated by prosecutors being approximately 1.1 million euros.
As part of the procedures, the former candidate is to be brought from detention to attend the search of electronic devices seized during the raid. DIICOT prosecutors continue checks concerning the overall financial circulation in this case.
