A 27-year-old man from Tărlungeni has been detained by Brașov police following an accident caused by an illegal car race, according to ProTV News. The incident occurred late at night on a boulevard in Brașov's Civic Centre.
According to ProTV correspondents, two vehicles accelerated rapidly from a traffic light, speeding along the nearly empty boulevard at that hour. The driver of one of the vehicles lost control, crashed violently into a pole, and the car spun several times across the road.
The driver escaped unharmed, but the passenger in the right seat was rushed to hospital in very serious condition.
Footage captured by surveillance cameras in the area allowed police to establish the exact circumstances of the accident and confirm that the vehicle was involved in an underground race that started from a pedestrian crossing.
The 27-year-old driver was detained for negligent bodily harm and for obstructing or hindering traffic on public roads. The second participant in the race, a 20-year-old man who was driving the other vehicle, is also being investigated by authorities.
