A medical professional in a management position at a hospital unit in Dâmbovița county has been taken into custody, suspected of demanding and receiving money from people for services that should have been provided without charge. Investigators claim the doctor was collecting sums ranging between one hundred and four hundred lei from patients or their families, according to information transmitted by G4Media.ro, which cites Agerpres.
Prosecutors attached to the Dâmbovița Court announced that at the beginning of June 2026 they initiated criminal proceedings against the man. He is accused of the offence of passive corruption, committed repeatedly over a determined period.
According to the preliminary indictment, during the interval April – May 2026, the suspect allegedly systematically collected various sums from people who presented themselves at the hospital. The illegal payments were associated with basic medical activities: assessment of health status, issuance of medical prescriptions and admission to the healthcare unit.
The authorities deprived the defendant of liberty for one day, after which they presented him to the competent magistrate with a proposal that he be placed in preventative custody for three decades.
The case once again highlights corruption problems in the Romanian healthcare system, where some professionals continue to profit financially from those in suffering.
