Călin Georgescu's security team restructured following arrest: only 3 agents remain

Călin Georgescu's bodyguards reduced from 12 to 3 following arrest

Călin Georgescu's personal security team underwent drastic restructuring following the arrest of the former presidential candidate, according to sources cited by Gândul. Paradoxically, before Bucharest Court of Appeal issued its final ruling, the agents had been assured they would retain their positions regardless of the court's decision.

Georgescu was accompanied by bodyguards with military training even before becoming widely known to the public following the result of the first round of the presidential elections. The team was led by Marin Burcea, a former fighter with the Foreign Legion. During the election campaign, Georgescu did not request protection from the SPP (Presidential Protection and Guard Service), citing, according to the sources quoted, lack of confidence in the discretion of the agents who would have been designated to protect him.

As his political influence grew, the team was expanded, reaching 12 people, all from military structures.

Unexpected arrest, unkept promises

On 21 September, prosecutors from DIICOT detained Georgescu for 24 hours, accused of forming an organised criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences, in continuous form. The file stems from a complaint by a businessman who claims he lost approximately 1.1 million euros in a scheme related to obtaining financing for a precious metals business.

DIICOT subsequently requested preventive arrest for 30 days, a request rejected by Bucharest Tribunal, which placed Georgescu under judicial supervision for 60 days. Prosecutors contested this decision, and on 29 September the case reached Bucharest Court of Appeal, which ordered the politician's arrest — a decision described by sources as unexpected.

On Tuesday, Bucharest Tribunal replaced the preventive arrest measure with house arrest, however the decision is not yet enforceable. The final say will again rest with Bucharest Court of Appeal, which is to rule on DIICOT's appeal.

Three agents remain to provide protection for Cristela Georgescu

Gândul reports that following the arrest decision and after funds from Georgescu's accounts were seized, only three of the 12 bodyguards remained in active service. These currently provide security for Cristela Georgescu, the politician's wife. The remaining team members were sent home.

The sources cited specify that the dismissed agents could be immediately reactivated following a possible release of Georgescu from arrest.
