Magistrates in Maramureș have rejected an appeal by anti-corruption prosecutors, and Cătălin Cherecheș will leave prison.

Conditional release for former mayor of Baia Mare
Judges at Maramureș County Court rejected on Friday the DNA's appeal against the decision through which Cătălin Cherecheș was to be released before the end of his sentence. The verdict is final, and the politician will be released from detention.
The hearing took place rapidly, in approximately twenty minutes. The convicted man was present via video link from Baia Mare prison, accompanied by a defence lawyer.
Anti-corruption prosecutors had contested the first-instance ruling, but the magistrates found the request lacking in substance. Cherecheș was serving a five-year sentence for bribery.
After leaving prison, the former mayor will be monitored by authorities until the expiration of his sentence and must comply with the restrictions set by the court.
He has another conviction at first instance for crossing the border using a relative's identity document. He received one year and four months. The appeal will be heard in autumn at Cluj.
