Scam of 40,000 lei in Alba Iulia using "Accident" method
An 89-year-old pensioner, resident in Alba Iulia municipality, was deprived of 40,000 lei by individuals who resorted to a scheme known as the "Accident method". The crime occurred on the morning of 30 June 2026.
According to information provided by Alba County Police Inspectorate, at 09:00, the elderly woman was contacted at her landline by an individual who claimed to be her son. He told her that he was hospitalised and suffering from medical conditions. Then, another man, who posed as a healthcare worker, asked the woman for money to purchase a medical device necessary for treating her son.
The victim handed over the sum to a stranger who came to her home's door. Only later, after recounting the incident to a neighbour, did the woman realise that she had been the victim of a scam, and that her son was in good health.
Law enforcement opened a criminal case on suspicion of fraud and are taking steps to identify the perpetrators and recover the money. Representatives of the county police made a fresh appeal to the public to warn elderly people about these scams, urging them not to accept such requests, to verify their relatives' identities, and not to disclose personal data.
