Former priest and folk singer tried for trafficking in dangerous substances
Magistrates in Târgu Mureș have decided to remand Cristian Pomohaci, a 50-year-old individual who previously worked as a religious minister and folk music interpreter, in custody. Prosecutors from the organised crime investigation unit have referred him to justice on charges of distributing highly dangerous drugs.
The decision to deprive him of liberty was upheld by both the first instance court and the higher court, after defence lawyers unsuccessfully attempted to obtain his release or replace the measure with a lighter one. Their appeal was dismissed as unfounded.
Investigators claim that over the past two years, the accused allegedly supplied and sold crystalline substances with psychoactive effects to multiple individuals. The criminal investigation was initiated by prosecutors together with county police officers.
In early June, a team of investigators descended on the man's residence in Târgu Mureș municipality. During the search, approximately twenty grams of 3-CMC, a substance classified as presenting a high risk to public health, were seized.
At the same time, law enforcement discovered an impressive amount of cash, totalling the equivalent of over nine million three hundred thousand lei, gathered in eight different foreign currencies. In the dwelling there was also a mechanical device used for rapid counting of banknotes.
Pomohaci is not at his first offence of this kind. He is already incarcerated in another case, being investigated for sexual acts committed against a minor. On 5 June, judges upheld the prosecutors' request to order his preventive detention in the drug case.
His criminal history also includes expulsion from the clergy nearly a decade ago, in a context related to the recruitment of young people for sexual purposes, a case which was later dropped. In 2019, he was further accused of evading payment of obligations to the state, and was later filmed while conducting a service of exorcism.
