Former Timiș Prefect Detained by EPPO Prosecutors Following Extended Questioning

Elena Micicoi, former prefect of Timiș from the USR party, has been detained for 24 hours by prosecutors of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), according to europafm.ro. Five additional persons, former collaborators of the government representative in the region, have also been detained alongside her.

Following several hours of questioning, Micicoi received a detention order and was taken into custody. According to the cited source, all six individuals could appear before judges tomorrow with a proposal for preventive arrest.

The investigation began more than six months ago. In June, prosecutors and police officers from the office led by Laura Codruța Kovesi carried out 11 searches in Timiș County, including at the home of Elena Micicoi, who held the position of prefect at that time. According to sources in the investigation, the damage exceeds half a million euro — money intended for professional training courses for disadvantaged persons.

The facts subject to investigation include the formation of an organised criminal group, offences of forgery and illegal obtaining of European funds. A few hours after the searches were carried out, under pressure from USR leadership, Elena Micicoi submitted her resignation from the position of prefect.
