Judges at the Târgu Mureș Court of Appeal ruled definitively on Thursday that former priest and folk music performer Cristian Pomohaci will remain in public custody. His defence lawyers had contested the decision of the lower court, but the appeal was rejected as unfounded, according to information published on the court portal and cited by TVRInfo.ro.
Initially, the preliminary chamber judge at Mureș Tribunal had ordered the defendant to be sent to trial on charges of selling dangerous psychoactive substances, an offence punishable under Law No. 143/2000. The defence lawyers had requested either the annulment of the detention order or its conversion to house arrest. Both requests had been rejected at first instance.
The investigation began after police raided the artist's property in Târgu Mureș in early June. Law enforcement officers seized approximately twenty grammes of 3-CMC powder, a substance classified as a high-risk drug, along with a significant sum of cash in foreign currency.
According to a statement from the Mureș County Police Inspectorate, in the period 2024–2026, the man allegedly purchased, kept and distributed to various users quantities of crystallised narcotics. Pomohaci was already incarcerated in another case, being detained for sexual offences committed against a minor.
On 5 June, the judge for rights and freedoms at Mureș Tribunal approved the proposal made by prosecutors from DIICOT – Târgu Mureș Territorial Office and issued a preventive arrest warrant in the name of the performer in the case concerning prohibited substances.
By the Court of Appeal's decision on Thursday, the measure of deprivation of liberty is maintained in both the drugs case and the sexual assault case.
