Inspectors from the Sanitary Veterinary Authority have uncovered a possible fraud in the national animal register. The investigation was launched when dozens of sheep reported as dead in a south-eastern locality were identified alive in another area of Romania, according to Digi24.
Specifically, 75 sheep had been recorded in documents as dead in Tulcea County. Subsequently, they were found alive in Cluj County. The major discrepancy between the data in the system and the reality on the ground alerted the authorities.
Specialists warn that such situations can seriously affect veterinary health controls. A national register that does not reflect the real situation can hinder the rapid detection of disease outbreaks, with direct consequences for public health and food safety.
ANSVSA is currently conducting investigations to establish who entered the false information into the system and for what purpose. In addition, checks are being carried out to determine whether this is an isolated case or part of a wider mechanism of falsifying traceability documents.
