Fritz demands answers from SPP chief Pahonțu regarding involvement in 1989 repressions
USR leader Dominic Fritz considers accusations published in the press against General Lucian Pahonțu to be extremely serious and demands full transparency.
Fritz: "Cartel of silence" around SPP chief must be dismantled
According to News.ro, USR leader Dominic Fritz reacted on Thursday to an investigation published by Recorder concerning the head of the Protection and Guard Service, General Lucian Pahonțu, demanding that he publicly clarify his role in the events of December 1989 and June 1990.
"These are extremely serious accusations, I don't think we can sweep them under the rug," Fritz said. "The fact that this cartel of silence exists is quite a grave matter."
The USR leader posed a series of concrete questions which he believes Pahonțu must answer: what was his role in 1989, what was his involvement in Ceaușescu's repressions and why was there no statement of non-collaboration when the law required it.
"We need to find out what, actually, were the institutions that covered up, perhaps, this truth, if it proves true. Who knew what, when, why did this statement of non-collaboration not exist, even though it was required by law? All these answers, I believe, we must find," Fritz added.
Regarding a possible reaction from President Nicușor Dan on this subject, Fritz said this was expected: "I believe this is a matter relevant enough that, yes, we should hear his perspective on it as well."
The Recorder investigation, based on documents and testimonies, claims that Pahonțu — who has held the position of SPP chief for over two decades — was part of repression troops sent to the barricade at the Intercontinental in December 1989 and was also involved in the events of 13 June 1990 in Piața Universității.
Former president Traian Băsescu declared, in an interview given to Hotnews, that Pahonțu should lose his position.
