Georgescu brought to searches to clarify the trail of the money

Călin Georgescu is to be temporarily removed from Central Custody to participate in computer searches being conducted by investigators, according to Gândul. The former presidential election candidate still has 28 days left to serve of the 30-day preventative arrest measure ordered on Tuesday, 29 September, by judges of the Bucharest Court of Appeal in the DIICOT case.

Through the computer searches, investigators are seeking to establish the exact trail of the 1.1 million euro, the sum representing the damage mentioned in the case file. Georgescu is accused of, together with businessman Ionel Rusen, having defrauded businessman Răzvan Leu, to whom the two promised to open a financing line through a foreign bank. Investigators believe that Georgescu's presence at the searches could provide them with additional details about the circulation of the money allegedly given as a bribe.

In the case, the former presidential candidate is accused of forming an organised criminal group and fraud with extremely serious consequences. His lawyers have contested the preventative arrest measure, but the first hearing to resolve the challenge has been scheduled only for 17 October 2026.

Hundreds of supporters keeping vigil outside the "Beciulul Domnesc"

Over the first two days spent in custody, hundreds of Georgescu's supporters gathered in the park on George Georgescu street, in front of the detention facility known as the "Beciulul Domnesc". The protesters came from several regions of the country and chanted messages of encouragement, including after midnight. Some of them set up tents on the green space to stay overnight.

The chanted messages included calls such as "You have arrested an innocent man!", according to the same sources.

Georgescu had been picked up from his home by police on the morning of 29 September and taken to central custody. When leaving the courtyard, upon seeing the supporters gathered, the former candidate attempted to raise his shackled hands into the air — a gesture similar to the one he made a week earlier when leaving the DIICOT headquarters after 24 hours of detention. This time, the police officers escorting him prevented the gesture.
