Bucharest Court has rejected the preventive arrest of Călin Georgescu and placed him under judicial control. Political scientist Andrei Țăranu warns that Georgescu will exploit his appearances before state institutions for political purposes.

Judges at Bucharest Court have rejected a request for preventive arrest filed by prosecutors and placed Călin Georgescu under judicial control. According to Cotidianul.ro, professor and political scientist Andrei Țăranu from SNSPA has pointed out that Georgescu will transform these appearances before judicial bodies into political platforms.
"Just as we saw with the previous accusation, the one related to a coup attempt, Călin Georgescu transformed his appearances at police stations into platforms," declared Andrei Țăranu.
His appearances before judicial institutions have repeatedly mobilised Georgescu's supporters. The political scientist describes the phenomenon as a deliberate mechanism for political reconnection.
"And for weeks, dozens, hundreds of citizens came just to see him and to cheer him and to find ways to get in contact with him," Țăranu added.
The court's decision can be interpreted from two angles, the political scientist emphasises. On one hand, it reflects how judges perceive the stage of the case. On the other, it indicates the gravity they attribute to the facts presented.
"Namely, the fact that the case has not been fully investigated. Judges nevertheless consider what we see, or what prosecutors presented to us, as not being so serious," Țăranu explained.
A direct consequence of the measure is that Georgescu's sympathisers will again be able to get in contact with him, this time with an explicit pretext.
"On the other hand, the fact that it will allow Călin Georgescu to once again become a public figure, not a defendant or anything, in relation to institutions. Until now he wandered around the country without having any specific programme, meaning you didn't know why he was wandering around the country. Now, when he goes to the police station and meets with his supporters, it is presumed that there is a reason," the political scientist added.
The investigation opened by DIICOT is distinct from cases related to presidential elections. The new accusations target Georgescu for fraud with particularly serious consequences and establishing an organised criminal group, with the investigation showing damage of 1.1 million euros.
Țăranu questions the complete delimitation of this case from the electoral dimension, based on information publicly presented by prosecutors.
