Underworld figure placed under wanted notice after stealing 30,000 euros worth of cocaine from trafficker

Bucharest Tribunal sentenced Gabriel Bera, a known underworld figure from the capital, in absentia to three years in prison for aggravated theft, according to Gândul. Bera, together with two accomplices, robbed an international drug trafficker in July 2022 who had collected a package of cocaine from the Netherlands, valued on the black market at approximately 30,000 euros.

The act took place on the night of 19 July 2022, around 03:00, at Militari Bus Station in Bucharest. According to investigators, Bera had previously learned that the victim was to collect the goods from that location. Prosecutors from DIICOT – Central Structure detained him immediately after the incident, along with his two accomplices, while the victim was also detained for international and domestic trafficking of high-risk drugs.

Following eight home searches carried out by investigators, objects specific to cocaine consumption bearing traces of drugs were seized, as well as various quantities of cannabis.

Sentence reduced, but Bera chose to flee

From the three years of detention set by the court, the period spent in preventive detention and home detention was deducted — from 21 July 2022 to 29 February 2024. Thus, he had approximately one year and six months left to serve. The trafficker who was robbed informed the court that he would not be constituting as a civil party and was not seeking damages.

Before the decision became final, Bera disappeared without trace. The Romanian Police published his photograph on the institution's website and placed him under general wanted notice.

Violent past and ties to the underworld

Associated with figures from the old guard of Bucharest's underworld, Bera was involved in a violent incident in the early 2000s. In a dispute with Alexandru Ilie, known as Sandu Geamănu, on the terrace of a restaurant in the Regie neighbourhood, Geamănu's driver pursued Bera to the toilet and stabbed him in the jaw in an attempted murder.

Later, Bera was allegedly accused of contempt after he allegedly pursued two police officers who came to serve him a summons and became involved in drug deals. During his period of detention, he allegedly became close to members of the Caran clan, frequently appearing with its leaders in the establishments they frequented.
