Ion Negoescu, former Interior Ministry officer, present at DIICOT for device verification
A key intermediary in the Călin Georgescu case presented himself on Friday at DIICOT headquarters to assist with digital searches carried out on devices seized by prosecutors from him. According to ProTV News, this concerns Ion Negoescu, a former officer at the Ministry of Interior Affairs, who has the status of witness in the case, according to judicial sources.
Negoescu is the person who brokered the connection between Călin Georgescu and Răzvan Leu, a businessman from Buzău who is the alleged victim in the matter, according to information published by Agerpres.
The investigation began from a complaint filed by Răzvan Leu, who claims he was defrauded of one million euros. Leu reportedly knew Georgescu through Negoescu, and the former presidential election candidate allegedly proposed his participation in a business involving precious metal transactions. The scheme involved a credit line of 6 million euros, and Georgescu allegedly recommended that Leu contact a trusted person, Ionel Rusen, who connected him with an Italian citizen, Massimiliano Arena, presented as the representative of a bank from Switzerland.
To obtain the credit, Răzvan Leu was persuaded to pay a guarantee of one million euros. Of this amount, 100,000 euros were intended to finance Georgescu's electoral campaign for the presidency — prosecutors stating that a detailed spending plan was even presented for this purpose. Subsequently, the victim transferred a further 100,000 euros, with the promise that the loan could increase to 15 million euros.
The credit was never granted, and the businessman from Buzău requested the return of the full guarantee of 1.1 million euros, money that he did not recover. Prosecutors accuse Georgescu of defrauding the businessman out of the entire sum.
Călin Georgescu has been in the Central Detention Facility of the Capital since 29 September, awaiting for judges at the Bucharest Court of Appeal to set a date for resolving the appeal filed by DIICOT. This comes after Bucharest Tribunal initially ordered the placement of the former candidate under house arrest.
