Surgeon and university lecturer arrested at home for assaulting a gendarme

A surgeon who simultaneously holds the position of university lecturer has been placed under house arrest while being investigated for the offence of assault on a public official. He is accused of hitting a gendarme who was on duty guarding the headquarters of the National Bank of Romania and of threatening him with dismissal from office.

The incident occurred while the gendarme was performing his duties at the BNR headquarters. According to the accusation, the doctor did not limit himself to physical assault but also resorted to intimidation, telling the gendarme that he would cost him his job.

The case was brought to the attention of prosecutors, and magistrates ordered the arrest at home of the suspect. The preventative measure was imposed given that assault on a public official is punishable by imprisonment under the Romanian Penal Code.
