Defence Minister Miruță on Georgescu's arrest: "If he did something illegal, he must pay"
Acting Defence Minister Radu Miruță has commented on Călin Georgescu's arrest and the CSAT report regarding the annulment of the 2024 presidential elections.
Miruță on the Georgescu case and CSAT report: "The Romanian state must bring clarity"
Acting Defence Minister Radu Miruță stated Monday evening on TVR that the Romanian state has the obligation to clarify whether Călin Georgescu acted illegally, according to Gândul. Georgescu has been placed in preventive arrest for 30 days in a case in which he is accused of fraud with particularly serious consequences and forming an organised criminal group.
"If Călin Georgescu did something illegal, he must pay. This must be clarified," Miruță stated. The minister added that Georgescu "stirs emotions in a certain category of Romania's population", but specified that this does not bother him. "The Romanian state demonstrates its power when it brings clarity," he concluded.
Asked whether the former presidential candidate would have connections among reserves from the Defence Ministry, Miruță said he did not possess such information. "I cannot say whether such links exist," the minister declared.
On another sensitive subject, Miruță defended the document presented by President Nicușor Dan at the European Political Community meeting in October 2025, relating to the annulment of the first round of the November 2024 presidential elections — a round won by Georgescu. To date, Dan has not published a comprehensive report of the CSAT meeting in which the decision to annul the ballot was taken.
"The President gave Romania a rather consistent report. I looked through it myself. It remains the President's decision whether and when he will do such a thing," said Miruță, referring to a possible full report of the meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defence.
