Police raids on psychiatric hospitals in Iași: falsified medical documents for disability certificates
Prosecutors and police officers in Iași conducted raids on Wednesday at two medical facilities and the homes of medical staff, investigating fraud involving forged medical documents.
Case of fictitious medical documents: raids at Socola and Pașcani
Prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor attached to the Court of Iași and police officers from the Economic and Financial Crime Investigation Service in Iași carried out raids on Wednesday at two medical institutions in the county, as well as at the homes of medical staff, according to News.ro. The investigation concerns suspicions of fraud, intellectual forgery and use of forged documents.
Chief Prosecutor Liviu Păiuși clarified that the operations targeted the Mental Health Centre "Dr. Ghelerter Iași" within the Socola Psychiatric Institute in Iași, Section No. 1 of the same institute, as well as the Psychiatry Section within the Pașcani Municipal Emergency Hospital.
Investigators are examining the activities of doctors and nurses suspected of having drawn up documents containing false information. "From the investigations carried out so far, it has emerged that doctors and nurses would have prepared documentation containing false information regarding medical diagnoses, medical care provided to patients, as well as regarding fictitious admissions," said Chief Prosecutor Păiuș.
The forged documents were allegedly used by individuals seeking to obtain certificates of classification into a disability grade. "The favoured individuals presented themselves with predominantly false medical files before the commissions responsible for issuing the certificate of classification into a disability grade and subsequently obtained, fraudulently, benefits and tax facilities," Păiuși added.
The investigation is to establish the total number of individuals who may have illegally benefited from benefits and tax facilities on the basis of these falsified medical documents, as well as the value of any potential damage.
The operation was conducted by police officers from the Iași Municipality Police and the Pașcani Municipality Police, members of the Special Actions Service in Iași, as well as gendarmes from the Iași County Gendarmerie Inspectorate. The evidence gathered as a result of the raids is to be analysed by investigators, with investigations continuing to establish all the circumstances of the case.
