Capital's Mayor, Ciprian Ciucu, Granted Permission to Travel to Portugal Despite Being Under Court Supervision
Bucharest Court approved on Wednesday that the capital's chief administrator travel to Portugal from 3–12 July, despite being investigated by the National Anticorruption Directorate for bribery.

A court panel in the capital ruled favourably on the chief administrator's request to leave Romania for a short period, despite the fact that he is under surveillance by investigative bodies in a corruption case, according to Jurnalul.
The judges established that the package of tourist services had been purchased on 10 June 2026, therefore prior to the preventive measure ordered by prosecutors. For this reason, the court considered that there was no real danger that the suspect would evade criminal prosecution.
Specifically, Ciucu will be able to spend several days in Portugal, between 3 and 12 July, in accordance with the itinerary established before he was placed under court supervision.
The general mayor of Bucharest came to the attention of the National Anticorruption Directorate on 18 June 2026, when prosecutors ordered his judicial supervision. Officially, he is suspected of receiving improper benefits from two businessmen originally from Jordan.
Among the obligations imposed by investigators is a prohibition on leaving the territory of the state without prior consent of the court. The court decided, however, that in these particular circumstances, the travel does not affect the proper conduct of the investigation.
Investigations against Ciucu concern suspicions of corruption offences committed in the exercise of his function as general mayor.
